Client LGS, formally Lucent and Alcatel Government Solutions business units, designs and delivers Transformed Communications and R&D-based technology solutions to the U.S. government community.
Product Products for wireless networks integrating the primary access functions to meet the special needs of smaller service providers.
Project Magpie was selected to provide technology and architecture consulting to guide the client's strategic and tactical plans for evolving their wireless product line to an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) ready architecture.
IMS has been designed and specified by the communication industry for the past eight years and is gradually being deployed. IMS is poised to integrate communication services for the benefit of end-users, network service providers, and independent application developers.
As an evolution from traditional telephony, IMS is based on SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and established Internet technologies. The framework is designed to enable services-not to define specific service features. Although simple in concept, IMS is complex in practice. While it presents significant opportunity for a new generation of service integration, IMS continues to be a work-in-progress.
In light of these challenges, the client leveraged Magpie's expertise in systems and telecom service architecture and implementation experience with SIP and IMS. Magpie started the project with little direction from the client in order to reach conclusions independent from the client's influence. Magpie applied their IMS expertise, and quickly acquired the knowledge necessary about the client's product line, to identify the most effective path for the client to provide IMS services.
Magpie delivered a comprehensive IMS Architecture Report including a technical overview of IMS, an assessment of the client's existing product, and an identification of IMS architecture alternatives. The report also included an evolution roadmap and specific recommendations for the architecture of choice. Throughout the two month project, Magpie investigated and leveraged the following technologies related to IMS and SIP: GSM, GPRS, UMTS, CDMA, FMC, WLAN, MMS, and, of course, IP, TCP, and UDP.
Outcome This architecture consulting project was a valuable success for Magpie's client. The client commented, "the report and the presentation were very informative and professional. We feel confident, based on what we've seen, that Magpie's efforts will be critical to our IMS strategy. Congratulations on a job well done."
The client has since selected Magpie to drive the next phase of their IMS work for their wireless products by developing a prototype demo system integrating a multitude of 3rd party components.
