Client     Avaya is a global leader in communication systems, applications, and services for enterprises.  
   
Product     Avaya has adopted VXML (Voice XML) in the implementation of their speech-enabled web and telephony applications. This open-standard protocol allows speech recognition technology to be embedded in a variety of applications in a consistent way with significant code re-use, making it easier for businesses to develop and implement voice browser applications that deliver natural language speech recognition across web and telephony functions.  
   
Project     The Avaya Intuity Response offerings centered on a proprietary scripting language for application development. To align with and be competitive in the voice response market Avaya needed to move to the open-standard VXML for application development. Magpie had prior experience migrating existing products to VXML and was brought in as an architectural consultant to assist with requirements and design considerations for the transition. Rapid development and turnaround was needed. Magpie was used to develop an automated VXML conformance and performance test suite (depicted below) to reduce the testing time from days to hours. This test suite led to an immediate feedback on release quality and was critical in rapid transition and release of an Avaya Intuity Response VXML offering. 
 

A customer trial using the Avaya Intuity Response was not approaching the promised call performance per system. Enter Magpie to do a detailed performance analysis of the application and the Avaya implementation. Magpie made application recommendations and implemented changes in the product that almost doubled the supported call performance.  
   
Outcome     The Magpie architecture consulting, test automation and performance analysis efforts enabled the Avaya product to rapidly and successfully go to market. All of the testing was automated and reusable, which further reduced the cost burden on the Avaya. Magpie's techniques of delivering business-focused results with rapid turnaround times made the difference in the success of this product. An additional benefit has been that the thoroughness of Magpie's test suites resulted in fewer defects remaining undiscovered until product release, resulting in lower customer support costs for Avaya and a problem-free experience for Avaya's customers.
