Merging SAN Equipment

Client     McData is the leading provider of storage networking solutions, helping customers build, globally connect, optimize, and centrally manage data infrastructures across SAN, MAN, and WAN environments. With nearly 25 years of experience developing SAN products, services, and solutions, McData is the trusted partner in the world's largest data centers, connecting more than two-thirds of all networked data.

Product     Magpie incorporated a McData partner vendor's SAN equipment into the same Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Management (EFCM) used by McData's SAN equipment. This allowed McData to merge the vendor's equipment into their offering, giving the two products one look and feel.

Project     Magpie worked with both McData and the partner vendor to produce a unified solution. Magpie's experience allowed them to post early warnings and avert potential problems.

Magpie delivered two releases. The first integrated the vendor's SAN equipment into the fabric functions of the EFCM. These functions included zoning, discovery, master event logging, call home, and group configuration manager. The second release integrated the vendor's SAN equipment into the security functions of the EFCM, known as SANtegrity.

Magpie operated in parallel with two other McData release teams. This allowed for faster development since the two companies did not have to coordinate builds and thus eliminated productivity impacts. Further productivity enhancements were realized when it was time to merge the code. Magpie developed automatic merge tools that were more robust than doing a manual merge.

Outcome     The project was successfully completed on time and within budget. Working as a trusted partner, Magpie spearheaded the solution and solved potential problems.

Magpie enabled a SAN company to incorporate partner vendors into its production offering.
