Product    Communication Manager is Avaya’s flagship IP Telephony software platform. With release 5.0, Avaya leverages the SIP protocol to improve the connectivity and openness of Communication Manager, which translates into reduced costs for trunking and connecting systems, faster deployment of new capabilities and increased options for linking communications and business systems. 
 
Project     Avaya brought in an IMS expert from Magpie to work side by side with their own expert to enhance the Communication Manager to support IMS network architectures. Casting Communication Manager as an IMS Application Server meant supporting the IMS ISC interface defined in multiple IETF and 3GPP specifications. It also forced Communications Manager to adopt a new half-call processing model to support the IMS session management requirements. Magpie advised Avaya on what IMS compliance was necessary, provided an architecture that would interoperate with a selected IMS core, and laid the groundwork for future interoperability. Magpie then helped make the necessary software modifications to Communication Manager from design through system test.
 
Outcome    Magpie demonstrated that calls could be made with the IMS core and delivered on time. Magpie was viewed as a valuable member of the team that led to the successful release of Communication Manager 5.0.
